The 2 Langdales
Distance: 9 miles (14.5 km) Ascent: 800 ft (250 m) Time: 4½ - 5½ hours
Turn right out of the gate and walk down to New Dungeon Ghyll. Turn left opposite the car park signed to Oak Howe and cross the valley to Side House farm. Take the path to the right and over a couple of stiles. Keep to the left of the trees near the campsite and through a gate to join a newly constructed zig zag path that rises steeply to the top of Blea Tarn pass.
Cross the road at the cattle grid and go left through gate at the Wrynose Pass sign. A wide path leads down to Blea Tarn and through the woodland at its side. At the end bear right through gate and head down besides the beck (waterfalls) and later besides wall, then bears right heading towards the high peak of Wetherlam, eventually joining the Wrynose Pass road. Turn left and follow the road down into Little Langdale.
Just before reaching Fell Foot farm is the Ting Mound (an ancient meeting place) which can be accessed through a gate. After passing the farm turn right over stone bridge signed to Tilberthwaite. Cross the valley and bear left on wide track with good views over the valley and Lingmoor. Keep left at a junction of paths signed to the A593.
After passing a couple of old farm buildings a gate is reached which leads down to Slaters bridge. We'll return here later but for now we're headed to Cathedral quarry. Continue along track and pass through gate then right over stile besides gate and up track (spoil heaps) to arrive at a short tunnel that leads into the huge cavern of Cathedral quarry, impressive with its central pillar. It is easiest to leave by the same entrance, but it's possible to exit by the tunnel on the opposite side, followed by a steep scramble out.
Go back to the gate which leads down to Slaters bridge. After crossing the ancient bridge the path splits. If wanting to visit the Three Shire Stone Inn take the path to the right, turn left at minor road, then right at the top. Otherwise take the left path up to the road, then left and immediatley right. From the pub follow road up to the top and turn right signed to Ambleside.
After the high point of the track is reached pass through the gate and turn left on path that leads uphill for a while, before dropping down into Great Langdale. A minor road is reached at a cottage. Turn left here and walk through the woods to Basebrown farm. Turn right through gate signed Cumbria Way and through the campsite, turning left when the Beck is reached. Walk through the valley with a great view of the Langdale Pikes ahead. Turn right at bridge and cross the valley to the road. Turn left and it's a few minutes walk back along the road to the cottages.
